Welcome to our blog!

We are the students of Curating African Textiles, a fourth year seminar at Carleton University, taught by Conversation Pieces curator Catherine Hale.  Conversation Pieces: African Textiles from Barbara and Bill McCann’s Collection will be on display at the Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) from 14 February to 17 April 2011.

Over the past five weeks we have explored issues of authenticity, cultural hybridity, the art-artifact dichotomy, and the roles of collectors, curators and communities in the history of exhibiting African arts.  For the next five weeks, we will be raising questions, offering commentary, and developing discussions around specific textiles from Conversation Pieces.

We invite you to follow our discussions and interact with us.  You can also share your own responses to textiles from the exhibition via the “Join the Conversation” tab.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts, questions, and comments!
